The estimated number of foreign visitors to Japan in July 2024 was 3,292,500, marking the second consecutive month of record highs.
This figure represents a 41.9% increase compared to the same month last year and exceeds the July 2019 figure (2,991,189) by 10.1%.
The total number of visitors up to July has reached 21,069,900, surpassing 20 million at the fastest pace in history.
Reasons for the Increase – Where Are the Visitors Coming From?
The increase in foreign visitors in July is largely attributed to heightened demand during school holidays, particularly from East Asia and Europe.
Additionally, significant growth was observed in the following regions:
East Asia: Taiwan
Southeast Asia: Philippines
North America, Europe, Oceania, and the Middle East: United States
The expanding tourism demand from these markets contributed to the increase in the number of visitors to Japan in July.
Historic Records – Which Markets Reached New Heights?
Among the 23 major markets, 19 recorded their highest-ever number of visitors for the month of July.
The following countries showed particularly strong growth:
Asia:
South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, India
North America, Europe, Oceania, and the Middle East:
United States, Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Nordic countries, and the Middle East Moreover
both Hong Kong and Mexico set all-time records for a single month.
Outlook for Japan’s Tourism Industry in 2024
The number of foreign visitors to Japan is expected to continue increasing throughout 2024, painting a very optimistic outlook for Japan’s tourism industry. Strong tourism demand from key regions such as East Asia, Southeast Asia, North America, and Europe is anticipated, with further growth expected in the future.
